David Boyd, our Town Crier, is internationally known and respected. He participates in at least one major competition per year, while appearing at the many special events and celebrations that make the Township of Rideau Lakes a dynamic and vibrant community. Among other local events, David presented a greeting and salutation from the Duchess of Cornwall at the Delta Mill 200th anniversary. The following day he flew to England to take part in the World Town Crier Tournament in Chester. While there he won third prize at the Chester Oaks competition and was awarded second prize for the media coverage he generated in Canada.
He was invited to meet with the Victoria Tourism Association at a breakfast at the Royal British Columbia Museum where he offered a cry inviting the people of British Columbia to come and enjoy the beauty of Rideau Lakes. Later this summer he took part in the Ontario Guild of Town Criers championships in Brantford.
In 2012, at the end of July, the “Battle of the Capitals” World Invitational Town Crier Competition will take place right in our own back yard, and we hope to see David participating in this World Class Event. Criers from all over the globe have been invited to apply and once accepted will arrive at Kingston; follow the historic Rideau Canal all the way to Ottawa where final competitions will take place. Watch for details in the late spring & early summer.
The primary role of a Town Crier is as an ambassador for his community, as well as being the greeter, announcer, and a visible presence at a variety of events. His new uniform was crafted in the colours that appear on all the community signs of Rideau Lakes, burgundy and blue. The military gold braid and sparkling brass buttons enhance the uniform, providing a regal touch.
Town Criers wear a uniform from a period of history of their own choosing. Some prefer the 18th century dress and others Victorian or renaissance style. Uniforms often depict the colours of a city crest or coat of arms. Years ago many criers were old soldiers or sailors. Some of today's criers choose similar outfits.
