Aikido takes some of the spiritual exercises and philosophy of zen, yoga, meditation and healing arts and it blends these with soft, defensive-only techniques that were created by a Master with extensive martial arts training in judo, jujutsu and daito ryu aiki jutsu. The "Art of Peace" offers a very effective solution to conflict based on relaxation, harmony and compassion.
Students will learn to enter and blend in a circular and flowing motion with attackers thereby harnessing their energy and attackers are unbalanced and controlled through joint locks, pins and throws. Students will be taught how to safely fall and roll out of a throw.
Aikido classes consist of mind-body co-ordination exercises, ki-development exercises and self-defense technique training. It is practiced by men and women of all ages and does not rely on muscle strength. Aikido is non-competitive. While considered to be the hardest martial art to learn, if done properly, it feels as if you have done nothing.
Universal Ki Aikido offers graduated belt levels, and it continues to be taught on Monday and Thursday nights at the Elgin Municipal Complex from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Minimum age requirement is 13. Wear comfortable clothing and bare feet.
