SELF-DEFENSE
Aikido is a soft defensive Japanese martial art called the “Art of Peace” that offers a non-violent solution to conflict.
In aikido, we harness an attacker’s energy by entering and blending with them in a circular and flowing motion. In doing this, the attacker is unbalanced and controlled through joint locks, pins and throws. Students will be taught how to safely fall and roll out of a throw. Aikido is non-competitive, and if done properly does not rely on muscle strength.
Aikido classes consist of mind–body co-ordination exercises, Ki-development exercises, and self-defense technique training. It is practiced by men and women of all ages.
Classes continue to be offered Monday and Thursday nights at the Elgin Municipal Complex at 7:30 p.m. and running to 9:00 p.m. Minimum age requirement is 13. Wear comfortable clothing and bare feet.
