SKATE THE LAKE is back by popular demand! The seventh annual International Speed Skating event will take place in Portland on Saturday January 29, 2011. Various sponsors work with Portland Outdoors, a volunteer driven group of individuals interested in promoting sporting activities throughout the year. In 2009 close to 1800 spectators watched as skaters from all over the globe came to the Big Rideau Lake in Portland, and raced on a natural 1k oval. Numerous volunteers help with the event and the successful day is publicized around the world. Enjoy traditional canteen fare of chilli and 'Snert' a famous Dutch pea soup. Try your luck on natural ice with homemade curling stones. Races are open to all skaters of all skill levels using all kinds of skates. 3rd Annual Sled Dog Race, Skijoring Race, Kid & Mutt Race and loads of other exciting venues will entertain you in Newboro at the Lock Station starting at 10:00am Saturday morning and 9:00am Sunday. Breakfast is served for racers, participants, volunteers and the general public both mornings in the Community Hall beginning at 8:00am and Saturday night is a fantastic supper, again open to everyone. Dog sled teams of 8 dogs race two days over a 50 mile course. There are two classes of skijoring races planned - novice and advanced. Are you planning on holding a public event, festival and/or parade within the Township of Rideau Lakes? Would your event be involved in having a sale on a roadway or vacant lot? Could your event possibly block traffic? Would there be excessive litter? Are you offering an exhibition held for hire or gain?
Then you need to obtain a Festival License as per By-Law 2007-19. These licenses need to be applied for a minimum of 3 months before your event.
