SKATE THE LAKE is back by popular demand! The seventh annual International Speed Skating event will take place in Portland on Saturday January 29, 2011. Various sponsors work with Portland Outdoors, a volunteer driven group of individuals interested in promoting sporting activities throughout the year. In 2009 close to 1800 spectators watched as skaters from all over the globe came to the Big Rideau Lake in Portland, and raced on a natural 1k oval. Numerous volunteers help with the event and the successful day is publicized around the world. Enjoy traditional canteen fare of chilli and 'Snert' a famous Dutch pea soup. Try your luck on natural ice with homemade curling stones. Races are open to all skaters of all skill levels using all kinds of skates. Dog sled teams of 8 dogs race two days over a 50 mile course. There are two classes of skijoring races planned - novice and advanced.
