EARTH HOUR

Saturday March 27, 2010

8:30 pm – 9:30 pm

Residents of the Township of Rideau Lakes are encouraged to take part in Earth Hour 2010, Saturday, March 27th from 8:30 pm – 9:30 pm.

What is Earth Hour
Earth HourEarth Hour is a symbolic event in which people from around the world are encouraged to turn off their lights for one hour to show their support for action on climate change. Millions of people around the globe turning off our lights together demonstrates that individual efforts, when taken together, add up to make a big difference and can be as easy as a flick of a switch.

Earth Hour is a WWF event and it began in Sydney, Australia in 2007. It was such a huge success in 2008, that WWF decided to make Earth Hour a global event and it has been growing ever since. In 2008, millions of people in hundreds of cities in more than 30 countries turned off their lights for Earth Hour. In 2009, more than 4,000 cities in 88 countries participated!

The province of Ontario, excluding the city of Toronto, saw a 6% decrease of electricity. While Toronto saw a decrease of 15.1% (nearly doubled from 8.7% the previous year) as many businesses darkened, including the landmark CN Tower.

Why Participate
Climate change is the most urgent environmental issue facing our planet and every one of us has a role to play to help stop it. Earth Hour is an easy and powerful way to send a message that you care about your planet and want to be part of the climate solution. More importantly, it sends a very powerful message to the government and world leaders that people want the right policies and regulations put in place that can achieve the meaningful emission reductions necessary to help fight climate change.

So please, as a Rideau Lakes resident, turn off your lights on Saturday March 27th, 2010 from 8:30 – 9:30 pm. We can make a difference!
