Rideau Lakes Public Library’s five branches in Elgin, Portland, Newboro, Delta and South Elmsley offer a variety of services to our customers. We have a collection of 39,000 books of all sorts and kinds – adult best-selling fiction, children’s picture books and easy readers, gardening books, cook books and biographies! Browse through our virtual collection on our online database; review your account, renew books and put books on hold from the comfort of your home. You may also order books through most public libraries in the province through our interlibrary loan system.
All branches have large print books, popular magazines, talking books, and videotapes with DVDs available at 3 branches. We offer talking books in both audiotape and CD format. Parents and caregivers will love our box of books for kids and bag of books for tots; these resources include books, puzzles, games, CDs and more!
The library is a place to get your reference questions answered and to discover facts about local history and genealogy. We have a microfilm reader at the main branch in Elgin as well as an extensive collection of local books, cemetery records, family histories and information on the Rideau Canal.
Each branch has free computer and Internet access through the Community Access Program. We do ask however, especially in the busy summer months, that you phone to reserve a computer since they do get used frequently. We do not allow downloads of any kind or Internet messaging. Discs must be purchased in the library for use in the computer. Children under the age of 14 are required to be accompanied by a parent or adult when they are using our machines. In 2007, we started to offer wireless access for laptop computers at all five branches.
The libraries also offer a variety of programming for all ages and interests throughout the year. In 2008, we are partnering with Leeds and the 1000 Islands to produce a series of programming through our Lakes and Islands Lifelong Learning project. We will be offering workshops in job searches, financial facelifts, tax planning, scrap booking, flower arranging, genealogy and many other topics. Please check out our website for a complete listing.
