Garbage and recycling collection is available Township wide (see waste collection). The Township operates one landfill/transfer station site in Portland (at 4427 H Old Kingston Road).
The landfill site will only accept household garbage in transparent plastic bags. These will be charged the normal tipping fee (note that curbside pickup of garbage is available throughout the township). For more waste disposal details read the Waste Disposal FAQ page. Please note that building demolition material (torn down buildings) is NOT accepted.
TIPPING FEES
All waste entering the Landfill Site is charged at a rate of $210/tonne. A minimum charge of $10 per visit applies to dispose of ALL waste. Small amounts of construction material are accepted (e.g. drywall, lumber, shingles, insulation, windows/doors & flooring). Buidling demolition material is not accepted. The Township reserves the right to limit the quantity of material brought into the Landfill Site at any one time. All bagged waste MUST BE IN CLEAR BAGS, black bags are not accepted. The Landfill Site accepts cash, debit, Mastercard & Visa. Personal cheques are not accepted. Bag tags are not valid at the Landfill Site.
Free at the Landfill Site:
Items accepted free of charge at the Landfill Site include – all recycling, electronics (see below fora list of acceptable items), scrap steel (see below for a list of acceptable items), tires (clean and off the rim), leaves/grass clippings (MUST empty pails and/or plastic bags), compost and Christmas trees.
ELECTRONIC WASTE
Electronic waste, e-waste, e-scrap, or Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) describes discarded, surplus, obsolete, or broken electrical or electronic devices. These items can be taken to the Portland Landfill Site, free of charge, year-round during regular business hours

Steel roofing & aluminum siding
Barbeques (no propane tanks)
Bicycles (tires removed)
Microwaves (with glass plate removed)
Bread makers, toasters & toaster ovens
Tire rims (clean tires can go in the tire pile - free)
Fridges/freezers (Freon MUST be removed)
Stoves/Ovens/Washers/Dryers
Air Conditioners (Freon MUST be removed)
Empty paint/stain cans (lids removed, paint/stain wiped out & dry)
Satellite dishes
Satellite, cable & digital transmitters or receivers
Thursday - Household Waste & Recycling to be out by 7:00 am.

There is NO waste or recycling pickup on statutory or civic holidays and the
landfill site will be closed.
2012 FREE Brush Coupon - ONE TIME ONLY
Each household in the Township of Rideau Lakes is entitled to ONE Free Brush Coupon. This coupon allows you to take one load, no larger in volume than a ½ ton truck (without racks) of brush to the Portland Landfill site FREE of charge. Please contact the township office to have a coupon mailed to you and then present it to the Landfill Site Attendant at the time of disposal. Any additional brush will be charged at $21.50 truck load. Valid January 2, 2012 to December 29, 2012 at the Portland Landfill Site. Does not include large stumps (over 60 cm in diameter)

PROPANE TANKS
Do you have old propane tanks you don’t know what to do with?
The Township of Rideau Lakes, together with Elgin Equipment Rentals, would like to offer you a place to dispose of them.
If you have old propane tanks that are just sitting around getting in your way, you can dispose of them free of charge at Elgin Equipment Rentals at #367 County Rd 8 in Elgin.
Just simply show up at Elgin Equipment Rentals during their regular business hours and drop them off. That’s it – it’s easy and it’s FREE.
Let’s do our part to get these old propane tanks back where they belong. Elgin Equipment Rental refurbishes and recycles the old ones!
Bag Tags
Bag Tags: everyone must purchase bag tags for curbside pickup of household garbage (1 tag per bag). All tags must be visible to ensure pickup. If the driver cannot easily see the tag, the bag may be left behind. Tags may be purchased for $2.00 each (no tax) in sheets of 5. Bag tags have no expiry date if they have been purchased (bag tags reading “curbside collection only” $2.00, do not expire). For a listing of bag tag locations see the Bag Tags page.
