Landfill/Transfer Station Information

Portland Landfill SiteGarbage and recycling collection is available Township-wide (see waste collection). The Township operates one transfer station in Portland (at 4427 H Old Kingston Road).


All waste entering the Transfer Station is charged at a rate of $222/tonne. A minimum charge of $10 per visit applies to disposal of ALL waste. Small amounts of construction material are accepted (e.g. drywall, lumber, shingles, insulation, windows/doors & flooring). Building demolition material is not accepted. The Township reserves the right to limit the quantity of material brought into the Transfer Station at any one time. All bagged waste MUST BE IN CLEAR BAGS, dark bags are not accepted. The Portland Transfer Station accepts cash, debit, Mastercard & Visa. Personal cheques are not accepted. Bag tags are not valid at the Portland Transfer Station.

Free at the Transfer Station:

Items accepted free of charge at the Transfer Station include – all recycling, electronics (see below for a list of acceptable items), scrap steel (see below for a list of acceptable items), tires (clean and off the rim), leaves/grass clippings (MUST empty pails and/or plastic bags), and compost.


Electronic waste, e-waste, e-scrap, or Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) describes discarded, surplus, obsolete, or broken electrical or electronic devices. These items can be taken to the Portland Transfer Station, free of charge, year-round during regular business hours.  Acceptable items:
  • Personal computers (desktop & laptop)
  • Keyboards, mice, cables
  • Monitors (CRT, LCD, plasma)
  • Printers (desktop, photo, laser)
  • Combination TV/Computer displays
  • Telephones & answering machines
  • Fax Machines
  • Cell phones
  • Televisions
  • Radios
  • VCR/DVD players
  • Video Games/Handheld video consoles
  • MP3 Players
  • Closed circuit displays


These items can be taken to the Portland Transfer Station, free of charge, year-round during regular business hours.  Acceptable items include but not limited to:

  • Pieces of scrap steel/aluminum
  • Steel roofing & aluminum siding
  • Barbeques (no propane tanks)
  • Bicycles (tires removed)
  • Microwaves (with glass plate removed)
  • Bread makers, toasters & toaster ovens
  • Tire rims (clean tires can go in the tire pile - free)
  • Fridges/freezers (Freon MUST be removed)
  • Stoves/Ovens/Washers/Dryers
  • Air Conditioners (Freon MUST be removed)
  • Empty paint/stain cans (lids removed, paint/stain wiped out & dry)
  • Satellite dishes
  • Satellite, cable & digital transmitters or receivers
  • Pots, pans & metal bakeware
  • Hot water heaters

Transfer Station Hours - Statutory Holidays

There is NO waste or recycling pickup on statutory or civic holidays

The Township has registered with the Ontario Tire Stewardship and now accepts used tires at the Portland Transfer Station at no charge. For more information on the program see the PDF brochure: Ontario Tire Stewardship Brochure


Propane tanks can be returned to a retailer that services tanks or can be taken to a hazardous waste event.

Bag Tags

Bag Tags: everyone must purchase bag tags for curbside pickup of household garbage (1 tag per bag). All tags must be visible to ensure pickup. If the driver cannot easily see the tag, the bag may be left behind. Tags may be purchased for $2.50 each (no tax) in sheets of 5. Bag tags have no expiry date if they have been purchased (bag tags reading “curbside collection only” $2.50, do not expire).
