Hazardous Waste is a waste which, because of its quantity, concentration, or characteristics, may be hazardous to human health or the environment when improperly treated, stored, transported or disposed. Items may be brought to one of the Township's hazardous waste days (see dates above) or alternatively watch your local paper for Household Hazardous Waste Days organized by the County in August and September each year.
Acceptable items include:
Batteries (household & car)
Paint/Stains/Primers
Solvents
Used oil/gasoline (must be in container)
Fluorescent light bulbs & tubes
Household cleaning products
Household detergents, waxes
Pharmaceuticals (pills, medicine, NO needles)
Pesticides/Fertilizers/Herbicides/Insecticides
Propane tanks (1 lb single use only)
Pool chemicals
Windshield washer fluid
Spent fire extinguishers
Aerosols
Items NOT accepted as Hazardous Waste:
Radioactive Waste
Lighting Ballasts
PCBs
Empty paint cans – scrap steel (lid off & dry)
Garbage
Needles/Pathological waste – call a local pharmacy
Propane tanks (20lbs) – take to Elgin Equipment Rentals
Explosives (including flares) – call OPP
Empty aerosol cans (garbage)
Alternate Hazardous Waste Disposal
The following retail outlets will accept certain hazardous waste items (see the lists below) for disposal during normal business hours.
If you are aware of any other locations that will accept hazardous waste from households, please contact the Public Works Department at the Township at mtouw@twprideaulakes.on.ca
