EnerGuide for Houses - Services and Grants
The Office of Energy Efficiency at Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) has programs that can help municipalities reduce greenhouse gas emissions from homes. One such program is EnerGuide for Houses which provides a pre-renovation home energy use evaluation service complete with air leakage test, written recommendation report and EnerGuide rating label for the homeowner. Of greatest value to homeowners planning renovations in homes that are over 25 years old or more, this expert service provides recommendations about energy saving opportunities and advice about renovation options.
Over 65,000 Canadians have used the service to date. NRCan data shows that if homeowners perform all the recommended renovations, they can expect an average 32% total energy savings, 38% if the home is fifty years old or more (May 2003 figures).
Recently the Prime Minister announced a new grant initiative to help support homeowners undertaking energy efficiency renovations. These grants are only available for homes that have a pre-renovation EnerGuide for Houses rating.
