This calendar is provided by the Township of Rideau Lakes to keep you informed of events, hours of operation, collection schedules, meetings and more. If we missed something, we appreciate your suggestions for the future. Landfill Site Hours of Operation 2010: Portland: Wednesday & Saturday 8:00 am - 4:00 pm - Located north of the Village of Portland, on Old Kingston Rd. Bag Tag Purchase Locations: You can purchase bag tags for $2.00 each (no tax) in sheets of 10 at the following locations - Elgin - Gordanier Grocery & Rideau Lakes Building Centre, Portland - Portland Foodmarket & Portland Landfill Site, Delta - Delta Country Market, Newboro - Public Library, Chantry - Municipal Office, Smiths Falls - Andress' Independent Grocer & Bill's Small Engine Repair Shop, Westport - Lower Mountain Mercantile, Westport Hardware & Kudrinko's Country Grocer, Rideau Ferry - Covell Building Supply. We extend a big thank you to all businesses that sell our bag tags. If you own a business and are interested in partnering with the Township to sell bag tags, please contact the office for more information. Garbage & Recycling Collection: Each week households have garbage and recycling collection. Your bags must be out by 7:00 am on your scheduled day. You are permitted to place at curbside, 2 bags of garbage with a limit of 40 lbs each and each bag must have a current Rideau Lakes tag on it. Garbage must be in clear bags (no colour). During hot weather, freeze decaying material to deter worms from growing, as bags will not be picked up if worms are visible. All large items and items not collected at curbside must be disposed of at the Landfill Site. Do not stock pile recycling, as a maximum of 10 bags each week will be picked up. Recycling must be clean, properly sorted and in a clear blue bag (no tag). See back pages of calendar for sorting guide. All bags set out for collection must be tied. All businesses must dispose of waste & recycling at the Landfill Site, bags tags are not required. See tipping fees below. Tipping Fees: All waste entering the Landfill Site will be charged at a rate of $198/tonne ($0.09/pound). A minimum charge of $10 applies per visit. Exceptions are: recycling (free) scrap steel (free), brush ($21/half ton truck load). Demolition material is not accepted. The Township reserves the right to limit the quantity of material brought into the Landfill at any one time. The Landfill Site accepts cash, debit & credit cards for user friendly payments. Personal cheques are not accepted. Bag tags are not accepted at the Landfill Site. All garbage is charged by weight. Free at the Landfill: Items that can be taken to the Landfill free of charge include - all recycling, scrap metal, leaves, compost and Christmas trees. Special Waste Programs Available: Household Hazardous Waste Day Hazardous material such as batteries, paint, solvent, oil, fluorescent light bulbs (please visit our website for a complete list) must be saved for Hazardous Waste days. Once a month between April & October 2010, the Portland Landfill Site will be accepting Household Hazardous Waste, free of charge (must bring proof of residency). See calendar for dates. Business Hazardous Waste is not accepted. Electronics Waste Days: Due to the success of our Electronics Waste Days in 2009, once a month between April & October 2010, the Portland Landfill Site will be accepting electronic waste, free of charge (must bring proof of residency). Items include cell phones, radios, televisions, fax machines, VCR/DVD players and computers. Visit our website for a complete listing. See calendar for dates. Businesses are welcome to use this service however, regular tipping fees apply. Brush Collection: Curbside brush collection has been discontinued for 2010. The Township is now offering a brush coupon program. See details below. Brush Coupon Program: In 2010, the Township is offering a coupon for one FREE half ton truck load of brush to each household. To obtain your coupon, please contact the Office at 1-800-928-2250 x230 or via email at michelle@twprideaulakes.on.ca or stop by the office and pick one up. Island Collection Schedule: If you own a cottage on an island there is a specific location throughout the Township which you can visit on Sunday afternoon/evenings, from Victoria Day to Thanksgiving, to dispose of your garbage and recycling. Every Sunday from 4 pm until 8 pm a waste collection truck will be parked at the following locations for waste and recycling collection for island residents only. Proper bags and tags are required. Glover Road Boat Launch, Franklin Drive Boat Launch, Newboro Harbour, Portland Harbour and Lower Beverley Lake Park Boat Launch. Forrester's Landing Boat Launch is serviced from 3:30 pm to 3:45 pm. Please note that the last five Sundays (September 12th, 19th, 26th and October 3rd, 10th) will be from 4 pm until 6 pm, due to the decrease in usage and daylight hours. Dog Licence: All dogs within the Township are required to be licenced under By-Law 2004-170. You can obtain a form several ways: with your tax bill, in the Community & Leisure Services brochure, on the website or stop by the Office and pick one up. Dog licences are required for dogs over 6 months of age and cost $14.50 in 2010. Municipal Dog tags have proven to be the most successful means of identification. Purchasing a dog tag can save you re-claim fees if your dog goes missing. Council Meetings*: Council Meetings are held at the Township of Rideau Lakes Municipal Office the 1st & 3rd Monday of each month at 6:00 pm. When a holiday falls on a Monday, the Meeting will be held the following Tuesday. This is indicated by "Council Mtg" in this calendar. Planning Advisory Committee and Committee of Adjustment Meetings*: Planning Advisory Committee and Committee of Adjustment Meetings are held at the Township of Rideau Lakes Municipal Office the 2nd & 4th Wednesday of each month at 1:00 pm. This is indicated in this calendar by "PAC Mtg". Municipal Services Committee Meetings*: Municipal Services Committee Meetings are held at the Township of Rideau Lakes Municipal Office the 2nd & 4th Monday of each month at 2:00 pm. When a holiday falls on a Monday, the Meeting will be held the following Tuesday. This is indicated by "MSC Mtg" in this calendar. * Occasionally it becomes necessary to change a meeting date and/or time. Notices will be posted on the Township website and in local newspapers. Emails: In 2010 we are creating an email list for residents to receive periodic Public Works updates and/or changes via email. If you wish to be on this list please send an email to michelle@twprideaulakes.on.ca with the subject - PLEASE ADD ME. This email information is not replacing mailings, newspaper notices or posters, it is simply another way to keep our residents informed. This email list is confidential and will not be shared or sold to anyone. Amateur Photo Contest: The Township of Rideau Lakes is holding a photo contest for the 2011 calendar. The contest will run from January 1st, 2010 to August 31st, 2010. Photos (4X6) must be submitted to the Township Office accompanied by a cd. Alternatively, you can email your photo to Amy in jpeg. format at aschur@twprideaulakes.on.ca . Photos will not be returned.
