NEWS RELEASE:

RIDEAU LAKES VACANT SEAT FILLED BY ACCLAMATION

 

Chantry, Ontario, June 5, 2017 – At the close of Nominations on Wednesday, May 31st, 2017, only one candidate had stood for the office of Councillor – Ward 1.

 

In accordance with the Municipal Act, on Monday, June 5th, 2017, Rob Dunfield was acclaimed to the office of Councillor – Ward 1 (Bastard & South Burgess) for the Township of Rideau Lakes by the Clerk, Mary Ellen Truelove.

 

Following the acclamation, Council held a regular meeting at 6:00 p.m. where the Declaration of Office was administered and Mr. Dunfield was officially sworn in to his new position as Councillor.

 

With the acclamation of Rob Dunfield, the By-Election scheduled for July 8th, 2017 (Advance Poll) and July 14th, 2017 (Election Day) will not be held.

CALL FOR CANDIDATES

 

Council declared the office of Councillor for Ward 1

(Bastard and South Burgess) vacant on April 3.


On April 24, 2017, Council passed a By-Law calling for a By-Election to fill this vacant Council seat

in accordance with Section 262 (1) of the Municipal Act, 2001.  By-Law 2017-29

 

News Release

 

Key dates for the Ward 1 Bastard & South Burgess By-Election include:

  • Nomination Period – Tuesday, April 25 to May 31, 2017 at 2 p.m.

  • Nomination Day – Wednesday, May 31, 2017 at 2 p.m.

  • Advance Poll – Saturday, July 8, 2017 at the Municipal Office in Chantry (1439 County Road 8) from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

  • Voting Day - Friday, July 14, 2017 at the Municipal Office in Chantry (1439 County Road 8) from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

WHO CAN AND CANNOT BE A CANDIDATE

 

You can be a candidate in the 2017 Municipal By-Election if you are:

  • A Canadian citizen, AND

  • At least 18 years old, AND

  • A resident of The Township of Rideau Lakes, OR

  • The owner or tenant of land in The Township of Rideau Lakes or the spouse of such owner or tenant.

You cannot be a candidate in the 2017 Municipal By-election if you are:

  • Any person who is not eligible to vote in a municipal election;

  • An employee of the municipality or local board unless he or she takes an unpaid leave of absence beginning the day the employee is nominated and resigns if elected to the office;

  • A judge of any court, a member of the legislative assembly, the Senate or the House of Commons;

  • A provincial employee, as excluded by the Public Service Act, a crown employee as defined in that Act;

  • An inmate of a penal or correctional institute under sentence of imprisonment;

  • A person who is prohibited from voting in an election according to the Elections Act, Municipal Act or Education Act;

  • A person who has violated financial requirements for filing financial information in the previous election.

You can vote in the 2017 Municipal By-Election if you are:

  • A Canadian citizen, AND

  • At least 18 years old, AND

  • A resident of Ward 1 (Bastard & South Burgess) in The Township of Rideau Lakes OR

  • A non-resident of The Township of Rideau Lakes and the owner or tenant of land in Ward 1 (Bastard & South Burgess) or the spouse of such owner or tenant.
